Backup and Restore functions

Backup allows you to save a copy of the contents of a unit (activities, resources, layout and settings). Restore allows you to import the backed-up content into a new or existing unit.

Important note: Restoring a Turnitin Assignment is not recommended and will causes problems with generating similarity reports. It is best practice to create new Turnitin assignments in new units rather than using backup and restore. See LEO Guides: How to create a Turnitin Assignment.

Backup and Restore are often used by the lecturer-in-charge (LIC) of a unit to:

  • Save a copy of a the unit for use at a later date.
  • Copy activities or resources from one unit to another.

Copying an activity or resource from one unit to another is a two-step process:

  1. Create a backup file containing the selected items and information.
  2. Restore the backup file into the required unit.

No student information (such as grade results, discussion posts, comments, etc.) is saved in a backup.

See below for instructions on how to use the Backup and Restore functions.

Duplicate function

If you need to make a duplicate of an activity inside the same unit, you can use the Duplicate function instead. Duplicate enables you to make an exact copy of the item with no student data that you may then customise separately to the original activity.

For further information about how to use the duplicate feature, refer to Duplicate an activity of resource

How to create a backup of a whole unit

  1. Navigate to your LEO unit home page.
  2. In the top right corner, click the Cog icon to open the unit administration menu.
  3. Choose the Backup option from the dropdown menu:
    Backup in the unit menu
  4. Step through the backup screens to select the items that you wish to back up, clicking the Next button at the bottom of each screen to continue.
  5. When you reach the last screen, click the Perform Backup button to save the backup file.
Note: you can modify the name of the backup file, but do NOT change the last three letters of the backup file (mbz) after the full stop. This is the file extension and needs to remain as it is.
  6. A progress bar will be shown as the backup file is created. When complete, click the Continue button.

Upon completing a backup, you will be taken to the Restore page. For more information, see the How to restore a unit or activity below.

You can back up a single item in your unit, rather than the whole unit:

  2. On the activity page, click the Cog icon to open the tool administration menu.
  3. Choose the Backup option:
    Backup option under tool menu
  4. Step through the backup screens, clicking the Next button at the bottom of each screen to continue.

To restore a backup file and add the contents of the backup into your unit:

  1. Navigate to your unit in LEO.
  2. Click the Cog icon to open the unit administration menu, then choose the Restore option:
    Restore option in unit menu
  3. Under the private backup area heading, for the backup file you wish to import into the unit, click the Restore link:
    Restore link in backup area
  4. On the next screen, click the Continue button.
  5. Select the unit you wish to restore the file into, then click the Continue button. You may need to refine the list by using the Search function:
    Selecting unit to restore into
  6. Step through the next few screens, selecting the content you wish to import into the unit from the backup, by clicking the Next button.
  7. Click the Perform Restore button to import the content into the unit.
  8. You will see a loading bar as it is completed. When finished, click the Continue button.

You should then be returned to your unit, where the contents of your backup file have now been imported into your unit.
